How did I Succeed in PRINCE2 Foundation Certification Exam?

Passing exams is never simple but we can take this opportunity of sharing our experience so that you gain the qualifications you need to progress your career. I just got certified as a PRINCE2 Foundation Project Management Practitioner last week, thanks to my company who sponsored me! I took a few notes and gathered some materials during my preparation and I was thinking of sharing these in a success story. It may interest a few people, I guess. As for me, I can stop breathing and thinking PRINCE2 Foundation intensively for 5 years.

Certification Selection:

We can see certifications on many forums, it is difficult to make a choice, it depends on the companies you work for, their sector, maybe the area too (PMP seems to be more mainstream in North America). But maybe there is no choice to make since we can often read that these certifications can be complementary: PRINCE2 Foundation would be a project management method whereas PMP would be about project management competencies and techniques. Well, if you have to choose, maybe take a look at each reference book and see which one suits you the best.

PRINCE2 Foundation Exam Preparation:

I did prepare for the exam all by myself, using processexam as a reference. Reading the book sequentially can be fastidious, wondering if all along the book, you’ll have to absorb so many things. But as you progress in the study, you realize that study online with books are linked to each other, that what you are giving online practice test, sample questions, the structure of your knowledge is getting more accurate and stronger. I felt that way especially when I started the preparation, the knowledge is getting even better when you practice samples questions as well and with experience. It is like a puzzle, lots of pieces of information, first you spend more time observing them trying to remember them and as you recreate the original picture, you see the links between these pieces and you are getting faster and faster to learn.

It's a human psychology that our brain does not handle information linearly but that it is based on relations between pieces of information. So learning PRINCE2 Foundation from a linear source such as a book can be very fastidious and not interesting for the brain. You’ll need to feed it with other kinds of information sources such as online practice test, sample questions, blogs, diagrams so it can enjoy and create easily new relations between notions. Try a search on the internet to find more diagrams and videos that will show you things in a different manner, providing a different perspective to your knowledge.

Master the PRINCE2 Foundation Manual for Practitioner Level. No need to revise like crazy, there’s time to find the answers in the manual during the exam. Right? Wrong! You have 1 hour to get 55 plus marks. What’s more, you need to aim to get 100% of the 55 marks if you want a fighting chance of getting enough questions right to reach or even exceed that 55% pass mark to give you an edge in this tough promotion and job market. Time to eat, drink and sleep that PRINCE2 Foundation manual so you can turn to what you need when you need in the exam.

Think Outside Course Box:

When you’ve got your exam head on it’s difficult to think beyond the immediate course. The best way, however, to pass PRINCE2 Foundation is through interacting with professionals, with fellow students and through finding opportunities to put learning into action both at work and through technology. How do you do all that? Well, ask your tutor questions in class, by phone or by email, follow blogs, Twitter, go on Facebook, try games and get yourself on forums.

Don’t Panic in the Exam:

The exam starts and you hit the ground running. Steady! First read through everything cover to cover. Then read each question, underline key words and finally answer the question asked. Do the simple questions first and review your answers at the end. Watch the clock, time can ebb away very quickly. And if you fail, don’t worry you can always re-take, just remember to keep calm and carry on. Exam tips are as follow-

• Answer on an answer sheet - Remember to mark your answers on a dedicated sheet of paper. Answers marked on a question sheet won’t be validated.

• Use appendix to appropriate questions - Use the additional information only with reference to the questions with appropriate instruction.

• Practice, practice, practice - Perform as many sample tests as possible.

• Remember about time management – Less than 2 minutes for each question.

• Questions - Such as Statement/Cause may be really time-consuming.

• Mark answers correctly – Remember to mark at least 80% of the square surface next to the answer and don’t go beyond edges of the square.

• Get some quality sleep – The exam is very demanding, you will need a rested mind and good concentration.
